An intrinsic understanding of patient care
Born into a two doctor family – my father was a country GP for 49 years. He subscribed to “patient centric care” many decades before it was even a saying or concept in modern health care. I learnt the importance of patient care from early on and carry it with me. Entrepreneurial talent My business skills developed from listening to successful business people including my grandfather and father-in-law, the Senior Executive Program at London Business School in 2013. I have been an avid reader of all things business and have had an enquiring mind to think “is there a better way”. I conceived the models that led to PSG, which Dr Alison Hughes and I founded in 2003. Every year since was profitable with a successful IPO in 2014. PSG based on a strong belief in the 3 A’s “affordability, availability and accessibility” PSG was born out of a better way to service patients – “dentists do dentistry, managers manage and owners can be shareholders for flexibility”. The PSG family grew on commitment of staff and dentists to patient care. It drove us everyday in what decisions we made. All PSG centre models were designed to suit each location to optimise the outcome for all stakeholders – dentists, patients, staff, industry, health funds and government (as subsidiser). A win-win for all. |

I am putting myself forward for the following reasons I have known Alex Abrahams for several decades. I admire his business acumen and trust him completely. He is a very successful entrepreneur and business leader and I have benefited from investing in his ventures over many years. The plans for PSQ Plus are compelling. I also look forward very much to working with the other proposed directors who I have come to know and admire through the process of developing our plans for PSQ. I have for a long time been focused on the health sector with my current roles on the boards of Guide Dogs NSW/ACT and the Sax Institute and as a past member of the Sydney Medical Foundation board. Like Alex, I grew up in a medical household with a much loved and trusted GP father. Need for balance In my 28 years at PwC, we focused on clients, people and firm, acknowledging that these need to be in balance for a successful organisation. Since I left PwC nearly 10 years ago, the focus on sustainability has increased enormously and I would add that to the balance that needs to be struck. I would look to bring this to PSQ. Well-led collaborative executive teams are critical to solving the complex business problems that present themselves with competing interests and I have seen this in action to great effect and, sadly, occasionally, the results when this is lacking. I am very encouraged by the calibre of the people proposed for PSQ Plus - they are collaborative and low ego. Culture Peter Drucker said “Culture eats strategy for breakfast”. You need both of course, but without the engagement of your team, strategy is just words on a page. I am very encouraged by the strong support from both PSQ dentists and employees for the change which will provide them with greater support and recognition of their contribution as they continue in their important work. |

Delivering tangible benefits for Pacific Smiles Group My decades of experience in working with Pacific Smiles Dental (PSQ) have become a springboard for my career in helping PSQ create a clinical education and mentorship program for new graduates. As a Lead Practitioner, I directed my PSQ center to grow from two chairs in 2012 to eight (total capacity) in five years. No PSQ or private practice operates four dental chairs on Sundays in Sydney. I proposed and spearheaded PSQ’s rollout into TRIOS intraoral digital scanners designed for improved hygiene, next-level ergonomics and an effortless scanning experience for patients I recognised a significant strategic gap in high-value dentistry training and education post-COVID inside PSQ. So today, with a first-of-its-kind, in-house Straumann SmartOne Implant training program, I am helping experienced PSQ dentists carry out high-value procedures. In addition, with the new University Graduate program, I am assisting newly graduated PSQ dentists to create enormous prominence in the corporate environment, providing them with lifelong skills and a world-class education and training platform in Australia. A deep-rooted values-based upbringing I was born in a small Punjab village in a family of teachers. My father was a teacher and farmer who instilled in me a strong work ethic and integrity from a young age. Early on, I learned the significance of perseverance and diligence by traveling daily to the city for school, two hours each way, and getting through dentistry after competing with over a hundred thousand candidates. Need for an innovative approach As a long-term PSQ front-liner, I have experienced first-hand the ill effects of the Board’s current strategy on commercial outcomes and morale driven by a lack of engagement, communication and support. Without able leadership, the PSQ team has been facing a challenging and unpredictable environment. However, I firmly believe PSQ is a solid brand with competent dentists and management, and so latent potential still encouragingly exists. I believe my unique and comprehensive life and professional experience will make a valuable contribution to the PSQ board and can be instrumental in helping us achieve the true purpose of improving the oral health of all Australians. |
